20/ Senate Panel, Spanish Envoy Discuss Ties, Region

Amman, April 7 (Petra) -- The Jordanian-Spanish Friendship Committee at the Senate, headed by Senator Abla Amawi, met on Tuesday with Spanish Ambassador Miguel de Lucas Gonzalez.

Amawi praised the deep-rooted historical ties between the two countries, saying the relationship between His Majesty King Abdullah II and King Felipe VI has had a positive impact on advancing bilateral relations across several fields.

She also commended Spain's support for Jordan on the Palestinian issue, its recognition of the Palestinian state, its position on the war on Gaza, and its backing for peace and stability in the region.

Amawi called for stronger Jordanian-Spanish cooperation in several promising sectors and for greater exchange of expertise in education, tourism, culture, energy, and administration, as well as higher trade volume.

The Spanish ambassador stressed the importance of reciprocal visits in strengthening bilateral ties, pointing to King Abdullah II's visit to Spain, which resulted in the signing of a strategic partnership between the two countries and a twinning agreement between Petra and Alhambra.

He said the strong and well-established relationship between Jordan and Spain stems from the close ties between King Abdullah and King Felipe, adding that Jordan and Spain share a unified political position on the Palestinian issue, particularly with regard to recognition of the Palestinian state based on dignity, respect for humanity, and the pursuit of peace.

The ambassador also praised the generosity and hospitality of the Jordanian people, which he experienced during his tenure in the Kingdom, noting that his meetings with King Abdullah contributed to a broader understanding of regional issues.

He also expressed pride in receiving the Order of Independence, which was bestowed on him by King Abdullah II in recognition of his efforts in the Kingdom.

The Spanish diplomat also shared his personal experience in an evacuation operation from Gaza, describing it as difficult and deeply moving, saying it left a lasting impression on him after witnessing severe injuries, including the evacuation of a child from Gaza who had lost three limbs.

Committee members praised the ambassador's role in strengthening bilateral relations and stressed the need to broaden cooperation between Jordan and Spain across various sectors.

They also reaffirmed Jordan's consistent positions on regional issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, and praised Spain's positive role in supporting Arab issues in international forums.
