10/ Transport Commission Awards Tender to Implement Smart Systems on University Buses
Amman, April 7 (Petra) -- The Land Transport Regulatory Commission on Tuesday announced the awarding of a tender to implement Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) on buses operating under the government-supported public university transport program. Implementation is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026, following the completion of contractual and technical procedures, with trial operations preceding full deployment in line with the approved timeline. The project will see 376 minibuses equipped with ITS across 29 routes serving public universities. It includes an integrated suite of digital solutions, notably an electronic fare collection system using smart cards and QR codes, a GPS-based fleet tracking system, onboard CCTV surveillance to enhance safety, real-time passenger information systems, and a financial clearing platform to streamline transactions among stakeholders. According to a Commission statement, the project aims to enhance service quality and operational efficiency, in line with the Kingdom’s digital transformation agenda and efforts to modernize the transport sector. The Commission said the initiative is designed to deliver a qualitative upgrade in student transport services by ensuring safer, more reliable and punctual operations. The project is also expected to increase user satisfaction, encourage greater reliance on public transportation, and improve the overall commuting experience through reduced travel times, enhanced efficiency and adherence to schedules. The Commission said this step reflects its commitment to adopting advanced global technologies to develop a more efficient and sustainable public transport network, particularly in student mobility, a key pillar of the Kingdom’s urban transport system. //Petra// AJ
