53/ UN Security Council Reviews Situation in Yemen

New York, Sept 15 (Petra) – The UN Security Council discussed the situation in Yemen on Monday, hearing briefings from UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher.

Grundberg warned that "the unresolved Yemeni conflict resembles a fault line sending shockwaves across its borders and amplifying existing regional rivalries," adding that wider instability in the Middle East continues to reverberate in Yemen, fueling divisions and hindering sustainable peace efforts.

He stressed that Yemen’s peace process will remain fragile unless regional sources of instability are addressed, cautioning that the current cycle of violence is moving the country further from a durable peace and sustainable economic growth.

Recent military activity in areas such as Al Dhale’e, Marib, and Taiz raises the risk that miscalculations by either side could reignite full-scale conflict, with dire consequences for Yemen and the region.

Fletcher highlighted that rising food prices, security threats to UN operations, economic collapse, and ongoing conflict have made Yemen the third most food-insecure country globally. He warned that by February next year, an additional one million people could face severe hunger, joining the 17 million Yemenis already suffering from food shortages, noting that "in one in five households, someone goes a full day and night without any food at all."
