19/ Aqaba Port Reports Strong Growth Across Maritime, Trade Activities

Aqaba, Sep. 14 (Petra) – The Jordan Shipping Association (JMA) reported that the Port of Aqaba has achieved significant growth across its operations during the first eight months of the year, reflecting the recovery and enhanced efficiency of Jordan’s maritime transport sector in supporting regional and international trade.

Mohammad Dalabeeh, Secretary-General of the JMA, said the growth stems from continuous efforts to boost the competitiveness of Aqaba’s ports and strengthen operational capacities, attracting additional international shipping lines.

From January 1 to the end of August, the number of container vessels arriving at the Kingdom reached 396, marking a 33.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The total volume of handled containers rose to 556,844 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU), up 22.3 percent year-on-year.

Passenger traffic at the port also rose by 28.4 percent, totaling 235,654 passengers, highlighting increased demand for maritime passenger services.
The report noted that phosphate exports reached 4.36 million tons, potash 1.59 million tons, and iron 448,152 tons. Imports included 670,253 tons of wheat, 461,974 tons of corn, and 683,936 tons of barley.

Livestock imports comprised 121,896 calves and 685,091 sheep. Vehicle traffic through the port more than doubled, increasing 100.4 percent to 58,418 vehicles, driven by higher demand from the Syrian market and the resumption of Roll-on/Roll-off shipping lines.
