42/ Jordan Reaffirms Climate Commitments Ahead of COP30 in Brazil
Amman, Sept 10 (Petra) – Environment Minister Ayman Suleiman reaffirmed on Wednesday Jordan’s commitment to strengthening national and international efforts to confront climate change and its readiness to actively participate in the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled for November in Belém, Brazil. Suleiman said Jordan has already felt the impacts of climate change in recent years, citing heatwaves, droughts, and flash floods that have affected water, agriculture, and health sectors. He stressed that the kingdom has developed comprehensive national policies and strategies to adapt to these challenges, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups. The minie highlighted progress achieved by the ministry, Jordan’s official focal point with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, including legislative updates, the submission of national communications and regular reports, the adoption of the National Climate Change Policy (2022–2050), and the preparation of a national adaptation plan. He noted that Jordan has pledged to cut emissions by 31 percent by 2030 and is preparing its third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC3.0) to reflect new priorities in mitigation, adaptation, and climate finance, while engaging youth, women, local communities, and persons with disabilities. During the meeting, officials presented a work plan for the 2035 NDCs in partnership with the UN Development Programme, underscoring Jordan’s ambition to boost resilience and transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon development model aligned with international trends and the Sustainable Development Goals. The National Committee also reviewed key agenda items for COP30, focusing on Jordan’s priorities in climate finance, capacity-building, and strengthening the role of the private sector and civil society, while ensuring alignment with the country’s Economic Modernization Vision to maximize the national impact of participation. Concluding the meeting, Suleiman stressed the importance of further developing legal and regulatory frameworks to keep pace with global developments and to ensure Jordan’s effective participation in international climate forums. //Petra// AF
