35/ Abu Saud, Moody's Ratings delegation discuss water projects, challenges

Amman, Sep.9 (Petra) – Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Saud, on Tuesday said the National Water Carrier Project ensures Jordan's "water security and represents a national security enterprise."

During his meeting with a delegation from Moody's Ratings Group visiting the Kingdom, Abu Saud affirmed that the government, in implementation of Royal directives, is moving forward "steadily" with the project's implementation.

The minister added that the project coincides with a time as Jordan's water sector continues to implement the economic reform program, as a fundamental pillar for ensuring financial sustainability and serving citizens, within the framework of the Economic Modernization Vision and the strategic plan for the water sector.

Abu Saud noted securing "sustainable" resources, such as the National Water Carrier Project, is a "top priority," affirming the government's "commitment" to completing all the project's procedures and commencing its implementation by the end of this year, in partnership with the local and international private sectors.

Structural reform package implemented by the water sector over the past years has contributed to strengthening the sector's resilience and boosting the confidence of all international institutions, including credit rating agencies, he pointed out.

The minister also highlighted the challenges facing the Kingdom's water sector, mainly in recent years.

The ministry, he stated, has achieved successes under its plans to address the water situation and meet citizens' needs and various uses.

In this context, he referred to the ministry's success in exceeding the set rates to reduce water losses by implementing plans and programs that have reached international standards, as well as confronting attacks on water resources and taking "more effective" measures to reduce the sector's debt.

In turn, the delegation, who is visiting the Kingdom to review efforts to stimulate the national economy and achieve financial sustainability, praised Jordan's efforts in confronting water challenges, calling for continuing efforts to address various challenges.
