38/ UN Rights Chief Decries ‘Genocidal Rhetoric,’ Calls Gaza a Cemetery
Amman, Sept 8 (Petra) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said he was appalled by the open use of "genocidal rhetoric" and the degrading, inhumane treatment of Palestinians by senior Israeli officials, warning that Gaza has become "a cemetery." Speaking at the opening of the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Türk urged decisive international action to "end the massacre." He said he was "shocked by the public discourse of genocide and dehumanization of Palestinians by senior Israeli leaders." Türk noted that Israel is already facing proceedings before the International Court of Justice, with evidence against it "mounting." He called on states to halt the flow of arms to Israel that could be used in violation of the laws of war, to apply maximum pressure for a ceasefire, and to ensure the delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid into Gaza by all possible means. He also urged governments to take firm measures against Israel’s plan for military control of Gaza and its accelerating annexation of the occupied West Bank. //Petra// AF
