Amman, September 7 (Petra) – Minister of Public Works and Housing Maher Abul Samen and Minister of Interior Mazen Faraya convened on Sunday to discuss a comprehensive development plan for the Jaber and Karama border crossings.

The initiative underscores the government's commitment to modernising infrastructure at key land crossings, aligning with Jordan's Economic Modernisation Vision and enhancing the Kingdom's image as a regional gateway.

In a statement issued Sunday, the Ministry of Public Works said the meeting is part of a series of ongoing discussions and field visits aimed at advancing the government's border development agenda, which supports Jordan's economic, social and security priorities.

The meeting addressed technical studies related to relocating the Karama crossing to a new site and reviewed logistical and organisational requirements for expanding the Jaber crossing.

Jaber has seen a marked increase in passenger and freight traffic, particularly due to ongoing regional developments and increased movement across the Jordan–Syria border.

Participants discussed implementing a forward-looking development plan that accommodates population growth, enhances border capacity and aligns with evolving regional and global trade dynamics.

The plan aims to support key sectors such as transport, logistics, tourism and trade.

Abul Samen noted that the development of border crossings is a strategic pillar of the Economic Modernisation Vision, particularly in enhancing the business environment, infrastructure and logistics services.

He said the government is committed to executing the projects according to the highest international standards in design and operation, which will facilitate the efficient movement of people and goods and reinforce Jordan's role as a regional trade and transport hub.

Faraya, in turn, discussed the critical security dimension of the project, noting that modernising border facilities would improve operational efficiency and bolster security control and streamline entry and exit procedures without compromising national security.

The meeting was attended by several senior officials, including Director General of the Customs Department Major General Ahmed Akalik; Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works for Technical Affairs Jamal Qteishat; Director General of the Al-Haq Foundation Brigadier General Sufyan Manaseer; Director of Residency and Borders Brigadier General Saed Qatawneh; and representatives from relevant ministries and agencies.

Attendees called for full coordination among stakeholders to ensure the integrated and effective implementation of the development plan, which reflects Jordan's aspirations to enhance its logistical infrastructure and readiness to meet future demands.

The Jaber and Karama crossings are considered vital economic and strategic links between Jordan and neighbouring countries. As key corridors for exports, transit trade and both religious and medical tourism, their development is a national priority.

Enhancing the two crossings is essential to achieving the goals of economic modernisation, strengthening Jordan's position as a secure and stable international gateway, attracting investment and improving services.
