40/ UNCTAD says rebuilding Gaza will cost over $70 billion and take decades
Amman, Nov. 25 (Petra) – The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will cost more than $70 billion and could take several decades. The UN agency said in a new report published on Tuesday that Israel’s continued assault and the restrictions imposed on the enclave have undermined all basic components of life food, shelter and health services pushing Gaza into "a catastrophic, man-made abyss." It added that the war waged by the Israeli occupation on the Gaza Strip has caused an "unprecedented collapse in the Palestinian economy," especially Gaza’s economy, which contracted by 87 percent. Per capita GDP fell to just $161, the lowest in the world. The agency stressed that "ongoing and systematic destruction casts doubt on Gaza’s ability to rebuild itself as a viable space and community." //Petra// AF
