33/ UNHCR, Islamic Relief launch health programmes for refugees in Jordan
Amman, November 23 (Petra) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Islamic Relief USA launched a partnership to develop health programmes supporting refugees and vulnerable communities across Jordan. The announcement came during a ceremony on Sunday attended by ministers and representatives from international and local organisations. Islamic Relief CEO Ahmed Shehadeh said the initiative marks a new chapter in the organisation's work in Jordan, noting the launch of a global medical programme in cooperation with UNHCR and the Pakistan Medical Association of North America. The programme aims to enhance the quality and sustainability of healthcare services. Shehadeh highlighted that Islamic Relief has invested more than $22 million in Jordan over the past two decades through food and winter assistance, women's and youth empowerment initiatives and healthcare services, including mobile clinics serving remote areas. Jordan, he said, was selected to launch the new medical programme in recognition of its humanitarian role and its continued support for refugees. The initiative will strengthen essential health services, promote sustainable healthcare practices and build the capacity of medical personnel. UNHCR spokesperson Youssef Taha announced the signing of a new agreement with Islamic Relief USA that includes a $2.5 million contribution to support UNHCR's health programmes inside and outside refugee camps. He added that a specialised cardiac surgery team has arrived in Jordan to implement a medical programme in partnership with the University of Jordan Hospital. Over the course of a week, the team will perform advanced interventional procedures including stent placements and a number of minor and intermediate surgeries for refugees and members of the host community. The agreement provides for additional surgical operations aimed at supporting vulnerable patients and improving their access to specialised healthcare, expanding the overall scope and quality of humanitarian services. Both organisations underscored the importance of their partnership in strengthening protection efforts, alleviating suffering and promoting sustainable humanitarian initiatives in Jordan. //Petra// AK
