55/ UN rights office urges global action over alleged unlawful killings in occupied Palestine
New York, May 28 (Petra) – The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the occupied Palestinian territory on Wednesday called on the international community to take decisive action to ensure effective investigations into unlawful killings, particularly amid a lack of accountability within the Israeli military and judicial system. The UN office expressed deep concern over reports of Palestinians dying while in Israeli custody, raising alarm over allegations of torture and extrajudicial killings. It highlighted what it described as a widespread pattern of unlawful killings, including summary executions. "These acts reflect a horrifying and systematic pattern of violations of the principles of international humanitarian law," the OHCHR said in a statement, emphasizing that the deliberate killing of civilians in the context of armed conflict constitutes a war crime. The office added that the recurrence of such violations, coupled with a clear absence of effective deterrence or accountability by Israeli forces in most cases, suggests these are not isolated incidents but rather actions carried out with implicit approval from both military and civilian leadership. //Petra// AF
