23/ MAP performs 2,250 free eye surgeries for Palestinians in anti-blindness campaigns

Amman, May 10 (Petra) – The Jordan Medical Aid for Palestinians Society (MAP) has completed its fourth and fifth anti-blindness campaigns, conducting 930 free cataract surgeries for patients living in refugee camps across the kingdom, the group said in a statement on Saturday.

The campaigns were implemented in collaboration with Al Basar International Foundation, an NGO based in Saudi Arabia, and Al Khansaa Hospital in Amman.

The total number of surgeries performed since the launch of the campaign in January 2024 has reached 2,250, according to MAP.

The first phase of the campaign saw 399 surgeries performed, followed by 923 successful operations in the second and third phases. During the fourth and fifth phases, a total of 8,072 patients were examined. In addition to surgeries, free eye drops and prescription glasses were distributed to those in need in a comprehensive effort aimed at improving eye health and enhancing the quality of life in target communities.

"This campaign is about more than numbers," said Islam Mohammad, MAP's program supervisor. "Each surgery tells a powerful story families seeing their loved ones regain vision, young people returning to their roles in society, and elderly individuals able to care for their families again. This is about restoring hope, dignity, and independence."

Mohammad emphasized the importance of collaboration between partner organizations and supporters, whose contributions have been central to the campaign’s success. She said efforts are underway to expand the initiative to ensure that no one particularly the most vulnerable is deprived of the gift of sight.
