17/ Minister Highlights Innovation, Cooperation as Pillars for Renewable Energy Transition

Madaba, May 8 (Petra) – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Kharabsheh, stressed that advancing the use and efficiency of renewable energy technologies requires joint cooperation at the local, regional, and international levels.

Speaking at the opening of the "Innovative Energy Solutions" conference, held at the German Jordanian University and organized by its Energy Engineers Club, Kharabsheh emphasized the need for accessible financing to support investment in this sector. He also underscored the importance of reducing technology costs through enhanced research, development, and knowledge exchange among stakeholders.

Kharabsheh noted that the Arab region, particularly given its desert landscape, holds significant renewable energy potential, positioning it to become a global leader in this field if resources are optimally utilized. He highlighted that energy is a crucial issue for sustainable development in Jordan, as the Kingdom imports 76 percent of its energy needs, accounting for 8 percent of GDP due to global oil price volatility.

He said that achieving a successful energy transition depends on innovation in renewable energy and the development of alternatives to fossil fuels, particularly solar energy, which plays a key role in this transformation. He pointed to the Economic Modernization Vision’s focus on renewable and alternative energy as part of a well-defined national roadmap.

The Minister reiterated the government's efforts to position Jordan as a regional hub for green energy production by leveraging its renewable resources. He noted ongoing studies to adopt advanced technologies such as electric transmission, smart grids, electricity storage, and green hydrogen.

For his part, Iyas Khader, Vice President for Academic Excellence at the German Jordanian University, said the conference comes amid rapid global changes in the energy sector. He emphasized the need to devise scientific solutions in response to climate change and technological developments that are applicable in Jordan and across the region.

Khader noted that the conference serves as a platform for knowledge exchange among experts and professionals while demonstrating the achievements possible when youth are empowered.

The two-day conference seeks to strengthen collaboration and knowledge sharing among engineers and specialists in energy efficiency and sustainable energy. It features interactive workshops and the formation of student committees focused on solar and wind energy, smart grids, HVAC systems, and sustainable transportation. Participants will also explore sector challenges and propose innovative, practical solutions.
