51/ Jordan, Netherlands discuss strategic cooperation on water projects
Amman, May 7 (Petra) – Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Soud met on Wednesday with Dutch Ambassador to Jordan Harry Verweij to discuss bilateral cooperation, particularly on strategic projects aimed at securing sustainable additional water resources. Abu Soud outlined the growing challenges facing Jordan’s water sector, citing climate change, rising demand due to population growth, and the strain from hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees as key factors exacerbating the gap between supply and demand. He reviewed Jordan’s integrated water resource management efforts, including water loss reduction, energy efficiency initiatives to cut the water sector’s energy bill, and major long-term projects such as the National Water Carrier Project. He also highlighted the importance of joint cooperation in groundwater recharge and wastewater reuse. Ambassador Verweij commended the ministry’s efforts, infrastructure development, and its humanitarian role in supporting refugees. He noted that Jordan remains a model for managing scarce water resources effectively despite its limited supply. The Dutch envoy expressed his country’s interest in actively supporting Jordan’s pioneering and strategic water initiatives, particularly in groundwater management. //Petra// AF
