35/ JFDA seizes quantities of illegally used milk powder
Amman, May 7 (Petra) - Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA), in cooperation with official authorities, seized a quantity of illegally-used powdered milk, documented the violations, and referred the involved parties to the Public Prosecutor. In a statement on Wednesday, the JFDA said the judiciary is currently investigating the case, adding that names of the involved individuals or entities "cannot be disclosed now to preserve investigation confidentiality and course of justice." The JFDA noted authorities tracked an imported shipment of powdered milk and "carefully" monitored its route, revealing illegal practices in selling this product to local dairy factories, which violates the originally authorized purpose. Stressing its "continuous" monitoring over food safety and quality in the Kingdom, the JFDA noted its staff has intensified oversight over the illegal use of raw materials for specific industrial purposes. Violations in using powdered milk and hydrogenated oils in the dairy industry have also been detected, which constitutes a "clear" violation of technical regulations and approved specifications, the JFDA said. The JFDA stated dried milk is imported for industrial purposes unrelated to dairy production and its sale or trade for unauthorized purposes is a violation punishable by law. In this context, some parties use legally imported quantities for unauthorized purposes, mainly in dairy products, which are a staple on the Jordanian diet. The JFDA underlined its "firm" commitment to protect consumer health and ensure safety of imported and circulated food in local markets, indicating that all products are subject to "strict" oversight and continuous monitoring by its qualified staff. Commending citizens' awareness and cooperation in reporting any violations, the JFDA called for continued collaboration in serving the public interest. //Petra// AG
