27/ Government Tenders Director Highlights Jordan's Green Procurement at MENA Conference in Rabat
Amman, May 7 (Petra) – Director General of the Government Tenders Department, Mahmoud Khleifat, participated in the two-day International Conference for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, held in Rabat under the theme: "Smart Response to Climate Change in Government Procurement." During a panel on "Sustainable Government Procurement," Khleifat presented a working paper detailing Jordan’s experience in adopting sustainable and green procurement policies. He outlined the government's efforts to establish basic implementation criteria, including assessments of the current situation, legislative frameworks, market readiness, and training and capacity-building programs. According to a statement issued by the department on Wednesday, Khleifat highlighted several projects already underway in Jordan, such as solar energy initiatives, an energy efficiency program targeting government buildings, and the construction of the Government Tenders Department headquarters the first fully green government facility in the Kingdom. He also cited the National Water Carrier Project and the replacement of street lighting units at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and the Ministry of Local Administration. Khleifat noted that Jordan’s e-procurement system has significantly reduced paper use, yielding cost savings and cutting carbon emissions, thereby reflecting the principle of "value for money" in public procurement. The conference concluded with a recommendation to establish a regional public procurement network in the MENA region. This network aims to promote the exchange of expertise, enhance good governance, increase transparency, and bridge the gap in applying international best practices in public procurement. //Petra// AJ
