17/ Energy Minister Launches Workshop to Update National Strategy 2025–2035

Amman, May 7 (Petra) -- Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Wednesday inaugurated the first national workshop to update the energy sector strategy for 2025–2035, with the participation of representatives from ministries, government institutions, the private sector, and local and international partners.

In his opening remarks, Kharabsheh underscored the transformative changes the global energy sector has undergone in recent years, particularly in storage technologies, renewable energy, and green hydrogen. He said these developments necessitate revising Jordan's energy strategy to keep pace with accelerating progress.

Kharabsheh noted that the previous strategy aimed to raise the share of renewable energy to 31 percent of the total energy mix by 2030 a goal now expected to be met by 2027 or 2028. He considered this advancement a strong motivation to set even more ambitious targets for the future.

He also pointed to the recent discovery of new natural gas quantities by the National Petroleum Company, describing it as a pivotal development that will help shape the energy landscape over the next decade. He highlighted the importance of a participatory approach in crafting the updated strategy, calling on public and private sector stakeholders, as well as financial institutions, to contribute to developing a strategy that reflects collective aspirations and not merely technical objectives.

Kharabsheh said the current challenges in the energy sector present real opportunities to establish it as a cornerstone of sustainable economic growth, in alignment with the Kingdom’s Economic Modernization Vision.

He concluded by stating that the updated strategy is expected to support economic growth, create job opportunities, increase exports, and drive comprehensive development.

The strategy update is being supported by the advisory team of the Jordan Green Economy Support Program, which began its work late last year and is providing the necessary technical expertise to ensure the new strategy is both scientific and inclusive.
