48/ UNDP: Global Human Development Progress Slows to Record Low

New York, May 6 (Petra) – Global human development progress is stalling at an unprecedented rate, according to a new report released Tuesday by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The 2025 Human Development Report states that instead of a strong and sustained recovery following the extraordinary global crises of 2020 and 2021, development gains have been unexpectedly weak. Excluding the crisis years, the projected global increase in human development for this year marks the smallest rise since the report’s inception in 1990.

The report forecasts stagnating progress in Human Development Index (HDI) scores across all world regions in 2024.

Titled "Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World," the report highlights how artificial intelligence (AI) could reignite stalled development and reshape human potential.

A new global survey included in the report found that half of respondents believe their jobs could eventually be automated. However, six in ten expressed optimism that AI will positively impact their employment prospects, potentially creating roles that do not yet exist.
