36/ University of Jordan launches first cybersecurity platform to boost digital resilience

Amman, May 6 (Petra) – The University of Jordan, through the King Abdullah II School of Information Technology, on Tuesday launched its first dedicated cybersecurity platform, "Cyber Security Hub – JUCC", aimed at strengthening cyber awareness and capabilities among its academic and administrative community.

During the launch ceremony, University President Nathir Obeidat said the platform comes amid growing global cybersecurity threats that now rival traditional military risks. He emphasized that faculty and students play a key role in shaping the future by generating and applying knowledge to defend against such threats.

Obeidat noted that the first cohort of cybersecurity students will graduate this year from the school, which is ranked among the top 100 IT faculties worldwide. He also announced the upcoming launch of a digital gaming center at the university.

Basel Mahafzah, Dean of the school, stressed the significance of the platform, saying cyber threats now impact every aspect of daily life. He highlighted the importance of institutional cybersecurity strategies to ensure the safety of digital infrastructure, data, and communications and called for raising awareness to reduce the risk of cyberattacks and build a more secure digital environment.

Mahafzah also reviewed the school’s achievements, including ISO certification and ABET accreditation for its undergraduate programs in computer science, information systems, and business information technology. He pointed to the launch of a cybersecurity diploma in collaboration with JODDB, and the establishment of state-of-the-art labs in cybersecurity, AI, robotics, and software development, supported by strategic partners.

Mohammad Al-Atoum, head of the Computer Science Department, said the university views cybersecurity as a national defense imperative, not merely an academic specialty. He praised the university’s strong backing for the program and the proactive spirit of its students. The platform itself was developed as a capstone project by the first graduating cybersecurity class.

Eman Momani, the project supervisor, explained that students led the initiative over the past year, demonstrating innovation and technical expertise.

The JUCC platform offers four key services:

1. Bilingual awareness campaigns targeting all university affiliates.

2. Tools to assess cybersecurity awareness levels and tailor training programs accordingly.

3. Maturity assessments of institutional security and compliance with national standards.

4. A digital interface combining educational content, community outreach tools, and competition hosting features, including a localized version of the Capture the Flag (CTF) cybersecurity challenge.

The launch event concluded with a ceremony honoring supporters from the economic, industrial, and media sectors and featured cybersecurity-related games, contests, and workshops throughout the day.
