37/ Army Foils Drug Smuggling Attempt on Eastern Military Zone

Amman, May 4 (Petra) – The Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) Arab Army said Sunday evening that units from the Eastern Military Zone thwarted an infiltration and smuggling attempt involving a large quantity of narcotics from Syrian territory.

A military source from the General Command said that Border Guard units, in coordination with military security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department, monitored a group of smugglers attempting to illegally cross from Syria into Jordan using forward surveillance systems.

Rapid response patrols were dispatched and engagement rules were applied, forcing the smugglers to retreat back into Syrian territory, the source added.

Following an intensive search and inspection of the area, troops discovered a substantial quantity of illegal drugs, which were handed over to the relevant authorities.

The source stressed that the Jordanian Armed Forces remain committed to using all available capabilities to prevent any form of infiltration or smuggling in order to safeguard the Kingdom’s security and stability.
