21/ Bakkar, Egyptian envoy discuss strengthening labor cooperation

Amman, March 26 (Petra) – Minister of Labor Dr. Khaled Bakkar and Egyptian Ambassador to Jordan, Mohammed Samir, discussed aspects of joint cooperation, particularly on issues related to labor affairs and Egyptian workers in the Kingdom.

According to a ministry statement on Wednesday, Bakkar said Jordanian-Egyptian relations are "brotherly and historically rooted," noting that the two countries' "high-level and continuous" coordination, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, reflect the two leaderships' visions on various joint issues to serve common interets.

Bakkar noted the ministry's measures to regulate the labor market serve interests of non-Jordanian workers and safeguard their rights, mainly protecting Egyptian workers from any exploitation.

The minister stated Jordan's Labor Law does not discriminate in labor rights between Jordanian and non-Jordanian workers.

Bakkar said:" Egyptian workers have been welcomed in Jordan for multiple years and continue to be widely accepted by employers."

Any regulatory measure aims to provide labor for the private sector, ensuring sustainability of its facilities, protecting workers, and providing a "decent" working environment, primarily work-related injury insurance in the agricultural sector, he pointed out.

Bakkar affirmed any illegal worker, whether Egyptian or otherwise, who has not yet been arrested, can come to their employer and voluntarily regularize and rectify their status, in accordance with provisions of the Labor Law.

The two sides also underlined the importance of the e- platform for recruiting Egyptian workers in regulating the recruitment process and protecting them from exploitation, the statement remarked.

The two sides agreed on enhancing awareness among Egyptian workers before their recruitment to work in Jordan about their rights, obligations, and responsibilities, in accordance with the provisions of the Jordanian Labor Law and the following regulations and instructions.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian envoy stated that Egyptian-Jordanian relations are "distinguished," thanks to wisdom of the two countries' leadership, noting that Egyptian workers have extensive experience working in Jordan.

During the meeting, the diplomat said the Egyptian embassy does not have any official statistics on the number of Egyptian workers and expatriates in Jordan and "relies solely" on figures issued by the Jordanian Ministry of Labor.
