28/ Lawmakers meet with South African envoy on Palestine
Amman, March 25 (Petra) -- The Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee convened on Tuesday with South Africa's Ambassador to Jordan Tselani Mokoena to discuss cooperation and the two countries' shared views on Palestine. . Committee Chair Dina Basheer commended the South Africa's support for Palestinian rights and the recent lawsuit filed with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israeli violations in the Gaza Strip. Basheer reiterated Jordan's steadfast position that opposes displacement of Palestinians and champions the Palestinian people's right to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital. She acknowledged South Africa's political and humanitarian stance, recognising the pressures it faces due to its support for the Palestinian cause. MPs Ibrahim Tarawneh, Mohammad Aqel, Tamara Nasser Al-Din, Dima Tahboub, Rakin Abu Hanieh and Nour Abu Ghosh highlighted the significance of South Africa's supportive efforts for the Palestinian cause, commending its legal actions at the ICJ in the Hague. They urged strengthening cooperation between Jordan and South Africa, particularly at the parliamentary level. Ambassador Mokoena affirmed her country's unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause in international forums, noting that the Palestinian cause "resonates deeply" with the South African populace, who have endured decades of "apartheid." She praised Jordan's role in defending Palestinian rights, safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites and providing political and humanitarian support to bolster the resilience of Palestinians on their land. She highlighted the "historic" relations between the two countries, citing the depth of collaboration in economic, tourism and cultural fields, with hopes of expanding future cooperation. //Petra// AK
