10/ Minister: Jordan enhanced sustainable water resources despite growing pressure
Amman, March 22 (Petra) – Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Al-Saud said Saturday that despite growing pressure on water resources, Jordan made key progress globally in achieving the sixth goal of Sustainable Development Goals, sustainable management of water resources and access to safe water and sanitation for all by 2030. He told Petra in an interview on World Water Day that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes a commitment to systematic monitoring and review of progress toward the desired goals and targets, using relevant global indicators, "which we are working to implement according to well-thought-out plans." Jordan's efforts in this regard are focused on adoption of integrated strategies to conserve water and achieve water security through desalination, reuse of treated water in irrigation, construction of dams, water harvesting projects, and groundwater management, he pointed out. "World Water Day is an opportunity to reaffirm and carry out the royal designation letter (to the government) and the keenness and interest of His Majesty King Abdullah II in the water sector, which is of strategic importance for food security, and to expedite strategic projects to achieve water security," he said. Key among these projects, he said, is the national water carrier, which will provide 300 million cubic meters of water annually, as well as measures to reduce water loss and limit attacks on water pipelines. The government recently launched the National Water Strategy for 2023-2040, outlining goals and plans to achieve water security and sustainability in line with population growth and urban and economic expansion. Abu Al-Saud also said the water ministry, in cooperation with international organizations, is encouraging the use of modern agricultural techniques, such as hydroponics, as it requires less water than traditional agriculture. In addition, it is promoting innovation and utilizing modern technological solutions to ensure optimal use of water resources, which contributes to achieving sustainable development goals and leveraging renewable energy. On World Water Day, which is celebrated on March 22 to highlight the importance of water and inspire action to address global water crises, Jordan attaches great attention to the sustainability of its water resources, recognizing the importance of water as a fundamental resource for sustainable development. //Petra//SS
