13/ Parliamentary Committee Reviews Amended Customs Law to Boost Investment, Facilitate Trade

Amman, March 13 (Petra) – The Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee, chaired by MP Khaled Abu Hassan, has begun deliberations on the draft amended Customs Law of 2025.

The session was attended by Finance Minister Abdul Hakim Shibli, Director General of Customs Ahmed Akalik, and representatives from the Chambers of Commerce and Industry, along with other relevant authorities.

Abu Hassan underscored the significance of the draft law in advancing the Economic Modernization Vision, noting that it aims to streamline customs procedures, stimulate economic growth, and enhance investment opportunities, ultimately benefiting citizens' quality of life.

He highlighted the necessity of modernizing customs operations through legislative reforms that simplify processes and reinforce the sector’s role in economic development. The draft law, he explained, introduces post-audit procedures aligned with international best practices and facilitates the expedited release of goods through an integrated digital platform to ensure more efficient enforcement.

MPs Mohammed Bustanji, Walid Masri, Ayman Abu Hanieh, and Firas Qablan stressed the importance of incorporating feedback from all stakeholders to refine the legal framework and maximize investment opportunities.

Shibli reaffirmed the government's commitment to fostering an investment-friendly environment in line with the modernization vision. He pointed out that the draft law allows the Customs Department to access necessary information and documents while safeguarding banking confidentiality.

Akalik stated that the amendments aim to align customs operations with international standards, facilitating clearance procedures through modern mechanisms such as post-audit processes and electronic notification and inspection, reducing the need for physical presence.

The draft law seeks to enhance the efficiency of customs operations, introduce greater procedural flexibility, and improve the investment climate, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of the national economy.
