25/ Police reveal source of alcohol that caused seven deaths in Zarqa

Amman, June 29 (Petra) – Police investigations into the deaths in Zarqa caused by methyl alcohol (methanol) consumption identified the source of the substance. It was traced back to a licensed alcoholic beverage factory.

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) media office stated that the investigation commenced immediately upon receiving reports, with authorities collecting samples from the scene and analysing laboratory results.

The team collected samples from liquor stores in Zarqa. Laboratory tests revealed the presence of methyl alcohol (methanol) in several products produced at the identified factory under various brand names.

The investigation team went to the suspected factory, took additional samples from inside the production and packaging lines and discovered traces of the toxic substance in one of the tanks used for production.

In coordination with the Food and Drug Administration, the factory has been shut down, its contents confiscated and those responsible for its operation have been arrested.

Investigations are underway with the suspects.

The PSD confirmed that authorities are collecting information on the quantities of alcohol produced and sold from the factory either directly to liquor stores or through distributors.

As of now, the number of fatalities linked to the consumption of the toxic substance has risen to seven, with one critical case reported following laboratory tests and autopsies.

The investigation remains ongoing.
