14/ Gov't Curbs Older EVs and Salvage Imports; Enforces New Vehicle Standards

Amman, June 29 (Petra) – The government initiated a major overhaul of the automotive sector on Saturday, rolling out new regulations set to significantly enhance public safety, protect consumers, and elevate the quality of vehicles entering the kingdom.

The comprehensive resolution introduces critical new regulations:

-- Mandated Specifications Adherence: All passenger vehicles – encompassing gasoline, hybrid (HEV), and electric (EV) models – will now be subject to stringent compliance with adopted Jordanian Vehicle Specifications. These standards mandate conformity to recognized European, American, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), or Saudi technical legislation. This measure takes effect on November 1, 2025, with no vehicle permitted entry after this date unless it fully meets these stipulated requirements.

-- EV Import Age Restriction: The decision prohibits the import of electric vehicles (EVs) if their manufacturing date, inclusive of the year of customs clearance, exceeds three years.

-- Ban on Condemned Vehicles: To maintain public safety and enhance the integrity of the imported vehicle market, the entry of vehicles classified as "salvage" or "junk" in their country of origin is now forbidden. This includes vehicles that have sustained severe damage from incidents such as fire, flood, or those officially written off as a total loss.

It's noteworthy that the Jordanian Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) had previously announced September 1, 2025, as the final deadline for customs clearance of electric vehicles that had received prior exemptions from conformity assessment instructions.

This new Cabinet decision effectively nullifies approximately 50,000 such exemptions granted to non-compliant vehicles over recent years.

These decisions collectively represent a pivotal component of a broader, comprehensive structural reform package for Jordan's automotive sector, designed to achieve market balance, long-term sustainability, and unwavering adherence to established technical and safety benchmarks.
