Amman, June 28 (Petra) – The Jordan Economic Forum (JEF) hosted Income and Sales Tax Department Director Husam Abu Ali and representatives of economic sectors, experts and specialists in a session to debate key transformations in the Jordanian tax system in recent years.

The gathering addressed challenges and measures taken by the department to enhance tax justice, combat tax evasion, and expand the tax base in a framework of transparency and voluntary compliance.

"What was implemented by the department in recent years was not mere reform, but a comprehensive revolution that changed the structure of the Jordanian tax system in terms of practices, legislation or even operational and digital mechanisms," Abu Ali told the session.

The department, he pointed out, had not confined itself to only combating tax evasion, but adopted a deep reform approach across multiple axes, top of which were applying international practices in tax management and transforming into an integrated digital department.

One of these transformations was the unification of tax administration across all regions of the Kingdom, including Aqaba and the free and development zones, he pointed out.

"In the past, each zone was under an independent tax administration with conflicting jurisdictions, duplication of procedures, and a weakened tax justice," he explained.

The Department, he said, adopted the internationally accredited "transfer pricing" system, which limits the transfer of profits to low-tax countries through the manipulation of sales and invoices between affiliated and interconnected companies.

This system is now part of tax return and requires multinational companies to fully disclose their transactions at market prices, he added.

The department also became a fully digital entity with more than 65 online services available to taxpayers, from registration to tax refunds, and it moved to artificial intelligence in tax auditing, which improved audit efficiency and uncovered thousands of cases of evasion, said Abu Ali.
