8/ Prophet’s Migration: A Defining Religious and Historical Milestone

Amman, June 25 (Petra) -- Abdullah Toufiq Kanaan, Secretary-General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs, emphasized the significance of the Prophet Muhammad’s migration (Hijra) as a defining moment in religious and historical terms, underscoring its broad social, political, and ethical dimensions.

In remarks to the Jordan News Agency, Kanaan highlighted that the prophetic biography offers a comprehensive civilizational framework rooted in principles of reason, justice, and human dignity. He noted that its impact extends beyond the Muslim community to all societies that value governance, social cohesion, and inclusive development.

Kanaan described the Hijra as a turning point that led to the establishment of the first Islamic civil state, governed by religious teachings aligned with moral and legislative values aimed at ensuring welfare, security, and peaceful coexistence. He pointed to the "Constitution of Medina" as an early example of constitutional governance that upheld equality and justice among diverse social groups.

Addressing contemporary challenges, Kanaan stressed the relevance of the prophetic migration as a source of guidance amid today’s complex crises and cross-border conflicts. He linked ongoing regional tensions to divisive agendas driven by geopolitical actors, specifically citing the role of Israeli occupation policies and far-right political rhetoric that threaten regional stability.

Regarding the Palestinian cause, Kanaan warned against the increasing pressures on Jerusalem, including settlement expansion and attempts to alter the city’s demographic and cultural character. He affirmed that Jerusalem remains a central and enduring issue within regional and international discourse, emphasizing the need for sustained commitment to its protection.

Kanaan also highlighted the symbolic importance of Jerusalem in the context of the Hijra, noting the city’s role as the initial direction of Muslim prayer and its presence in early Islamic teachings. He referenced the establishment of key religious institutions in Medina, such as the Quba Mosque, as foundational to governance and community development.

In conclusion, Kanaan called for drawing practical lessons from the prophetic migration to reinforce resilience, unity, and effective governance in addressing the political, social, and cultural challenges facing the region today.
