18/ PSD chief reviews Jordan's efforts to combat drugs

Amman, June 25 (Petra) – Director of Public Security Directorate (PSD), Maj. Gen. Dr. Obeidallah Maaytah, on Wednesday attended the directorate's celebration held to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

This year's theme, "With Efforts of Youth, We Fight Drugs," emphasizes the "pivotal" role of youth in combating this dangerous scourge.

Talking to the ceremony, Maaytah noted the 2025 theme reflects the PSD's vision on the importance of engaging youth as the first line of defense and the "key" pillar in confronting the drug challenges that threaten societies.

Maaytah stated Royal directives were a source of inspiration for the PSD's plans to develop and implement its prevention and awareness programs, which prioritize youth at the level of national efforts aimed at protecting society.

The director noted contents of the National Drug Awareness Strategy (2024-2026) are being implemented with "high efficiency and with active" youth engagement, reflecting the "seriousness and integration of efforts at all levels."

For his part, Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Jordan, Dr. Amjad Al-A'darbeh, praised the level of the office's "close" cooperation with the PSD.

Al-A'darbeh valued "tangible" joint efforts to enhance prevention and treatment, and harness youth energies in combating drugs under innovation, creativity, and "promising" community initiatives.

Engaging experts, the event also featured specialized dialogue sessions aimed to address the legal, social, religious, and awareness-raising dimensions of the drug issue.

Concluding the ceremony, Maaytah honored winners of the awareness competition, organized by Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) as part of the day's activities, praising their "creativity and role in disseminating awareness and protecting society."
