  41/ Jordan, FAO discuss cooperation to address water challenges

Amman, June 4 (Petra) – Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Soud met on Wednesday with Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), to discuss avenues of cooperation to address water-related challenges in Jordan and the region.

Abu Soud emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation to confront regional water scarcity, highlighting Jordan’s strategic efforts to ensure the sustainability of its limited water resources. He noted that Jordan has taken pioneering steps in water resource management, capacity building, knowledge sharing, and promoting sustainable water use in agriculture.

He reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to its partnership with the FAO to achieve water and food security goals, improve irrigation efficiency, and maximize productivity per cubic meter of water in line with the Economic Modernization Vision and the royal directives.

The minister also stressed the importance of integrated water resource management, enhancing water governance, ensuring service resilience, and adopting modern technologies in irrigation and agriculture. He underscored the need for regional cooperation to share experiences and ensure long-term sustainability of water resources amid the impacts of climate change.

Dr. Qu Dongyu reaffirmed the FAO’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Jordan, citing the country’s critical role in addressing water scarcity across the region. He also highlighted the climate challenges facing the region, such as fluctuating rainfall patterns and declining water quality, which pose direct threats to food security.
