14/ FAO, Agriculture Ministry Inspect Sustainable Agri-Food Project in Madaba

Amman, June 2 (Petra) -- The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, conducted a field visit on Monday to several sites in Madaba Governorate as part of the "Transforming to More Efficient, Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Agri-Food Systems" project, funded by the Norwegian government.

The visit aimed to assess the progress of the project’s second field phase, address challenges and proposed solutions, and explore ways to amplify its impact on beneficiary farmers’ livelihoods.

The delegation included Engineer Khaled Hais, Representative of the Ministry of Agriculture; Birgitte S?rgaard Wessel, Head of Development Cooperation at the Norwegian Embassy in Jordan; Nabil Assaf, FAO Representative in Jordan; as well as project stakeholders and beneficiaries.

Wessel commended the partnership between the government, international organizations, and local communities, stating, "It is encouraging to see how the project has supported both Jordanians and Syrians men and women alike and contributed to offering meaningful and inclusive support to small-scale farmers." She praised the farmers’ openness and their willingness to share their experiences.

Hais underlined that the project's activities align with national efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and adapt to water scarcity. He noted its contribution to improving household income, advancing food security, and creating employment opportunities to reduce unemployment.

Assaf said the project was designed to foster more efficient, resilient, and sustainable agri-food systems, directly addressing regional challenges related to resource limitations and climate change. He stressed the need for optimal resource management to ensure sustainability and strengthen resilience.

In its second phase, the project targets farmers from both Jordanian and Syrian communities. A total of 111 farmers have benefited from grant programs and capacity-building initiatives in agricultural business management, helping boost their productivity, increase revenues, and enhance project outcomes.
