17/ Jordan, Syria Discuss Cybersecurity, Digital Cooperation

Amman, July 30 (Petra) – Chairman of the National Cybersecurity Council, Ahmad Hiasat, on Tuesday received a Syrian delegation headed by Minister of Communications and Technology Abdul Salam Heikal, in the presence of Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Sami Smeirat.

According to a statement issued Wednesday by the Council, the visit marks the beginning of a working tour by the Syrian delegation aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation and exchanging expertise in communications, cybersecurity, digital transformation, and technical education. The visit falls within the joint efforts to develop a secure and advanced digital infrastructure.

Hiasat stressed that cybersecurity has become a national necessity, adding that the next phase demands broader Arab coordination to address shared challenges in the digital sphere.

He noted that, under the vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II, Jordan was among the first countries in the region to recognize the severity of cyber threats, establishing an early and integrated national system that has proven effective in countering rising cyberattacks and digital challenges.

Firas Zoubi, Director of the Policy, Cooperation, and Training Department at the Council, delivered a comprehensive technical briefing during the meeting, outlining the Council's organizational structure, operational mechanisms, and strategic pillars. These include governance, threat response, the protection of vital infrastructure, and the development of national competencies. Zoubi stated that Jordan aims to become a regional hub for cybersecurity and a center for digital innovation.

Both sides agreed that cybersecurity extends beyond technical systems to include public awareness and digital literacy, which serve as the first line of defense against cyber threats. They underscored the importance of continuous training, building specialized national capacities, and strengthening both institutional and individual readiness within a cohesive cybersecurity framework grounded in clear policies and unified regional standards.
