15/ Senate President Stresses Dialogue, Tolerance for Global Peace at Geneva Conference
Amman, July 30 (Petra) – Senate President Faisal Fayez stressed that achieving a secure and stable future for the world requires addressing the root causes of unrest and conflict, fostering leadership grounded in noble human values, promoting interfaith and intercultural dialogue, and spreading a culture of tolerance and compassion. According to a statement issued by the Senate on Wednesday, Fayez made the remarks during a session of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in cooperation with the United Nations. The session, held in Geneva, Switzerland, focused on the theme of innovation for peace and security in a war-torn world. Fayez called on parliamentarians to play a vital role in fostering justice and political stability, strengthening shared values among nations, and upholding diversity, pluralism, and minority rights. While emphasizing the aspiration to build a secure and peaceful global future, Fayez noted that the world today faces mounting political and economic challenges. He pointed to the widening gap in technological advancement and knowledge between the Global North and South, and to the proliferation of international conflicts. He warned that today's global landscape is marked by chaos, rising racism, and marginalization of values such as justice, freedom, and cooperation, which are now largely confined to rhetoric within conference halls. "We are living in a world where only the fittest survive," he remarked. Fayez underlined the critical role of parliamentarians in shaping a more humane and violence-free society. This, he said, requires flexibility and responsibility in addressing global tensions and contributing to de-escalation efforts. He added that parliamentarians also bear responsibility for enhancing the social and economic security of citizens by advancing the role of legislative institutions, consolidating human rights and social justice, and working to resolve conflicts through dialogue and peaceful means. This should be done in partnership with governments, many of which are composed of parliamentary representatives. The conference, which commenced Tuesday, brings together heads of parliaments, Shura councils, unions, parliamentary associations and organizations, along with United Nations representatives. Key topics under discussion include strengthening democracy, public freedoms, human rights, international peace, conflict resolution, parliamentary cooperation, pluralism, social justice, and development. //Petra// AJ
