46/ Media Commission Reaffirms Independence of Content Complaints Committee

Amman, July 29 (Petra) – Director General of the Jordan Media Commission, Basheer Momani, on Tuesday emphasized the vital role of the Complaints Committee in safeguarding professional standards and ensuring the public’s right to access responsible and balanced media content.

Speaking during a committee meeting, Momani underscored the committee’s full independence in carrying out its duties and making decisions based on the applicable laws and regulations. He reiterated the Commission’s full support to enable the committee to perform its role efficiently and effectively.

During the meeting, Osama Salameh was elected as committee chair, with journalist and Jordan Press Association (JPA) board member Khetam Al-Shoubaki elected as deputy chair, and Munther Jaradat appointed as secretary.

Other committee members include Saif Al-Junaidi, representing civil society; lawyer Marwan Salah, a previously named representative from the Bar Association; Laila Al-Sayyed, representing the audio media sector; Mohammad Al-Qaisi, representing the visual media sector; Nahla Momani from the National Center for Human Rights; and Nancy Khasawneh, head of the Media Commission’s legal department.

The Complaints Committee is mandated to review complaints related to broadcast or recorded media content intended for public distribution or presentation, under the provisions of the Audiovisual Media Law No. 26 of 2015 and its amendments. Article 4(j) of the law calls for the formation of a specialized committee to address such complaints.

The committee’s work is part of broader efforts to strengthen Jordan’s media landscape, foster a professional environment grounded in neutrality and objectivity, and protect the rights of both licensed media entities and the public. This aligns with the Media Commission’s mission to elevate the quality and credibility of national media.
