37/ FM welcomes UK plan to recognize Palestinian state

New York, July 29 (Petra) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Safadi on Tuesday welcomed UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement of his government’s intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in September.

Safadi described the move as a significant step aligned with international efforts to recognize a sovereign Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the two-state solution, relevant UN resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Jordan had earlier welcomed a similar declaration by French President Emmanuel Macron expressing France’s intention to recognize the State of Palestine at the same UN gathering.

Safadi also expressed appreciation for the joint presidency of the high-level UN Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and Implementation of the Two-State Solution held under the auspices of Saudi Arabia and France for their efforts in mobilizing global support toward solidifying the two-state solution.
