39/ UN Rights Chief Urges Global Pressure on Israel to End Gaza Massacres

Amman, July 27 (Petra) United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Sunday urged governments around the world to apply all possible forms of pressure on Israel to bring a permanent halt to the massacres in the Gaza Strip.

According to the United Nations News website, Türk emphasized the need for concrete international action to ensure Israel fulfills its obligations to provide adequate food and essential life-saving aid to the population of Gaza.

Expressing deep anger over what he described as an "unspeakable daily tragedy" unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank, Türk condemned the widespread destruction, killing, and systematic dehumanization of Palestinians, saying, "Gaza has become a scene of deadly attacks and total devastation, where children are dying before the eyes of the world."

He cited figures from Gaza's health authorities stating that more than 200,000 Palestinians have been killed or injured since October 7, 2023 amounting to around 10 percent of the territory’s population and condemned the killing of more than 300 UN staff members during Israeli military operations.

Türk affirmed the United Nations’ readiness to support Palestinians in building their state based on human rights and the rule of law. "When that time comes," he said, "programmes designed to support victims and survivors will be essential paths toward justice and accountability."
