36/ Nursing Council, WHO Discuss Boosting Mental Health Nursing, Primary Care Integration

Amman, July 27 (Petra) Secretary-General of the Jordanian Nursing Council Hani Nawafleh met on Sunday with Eman Shenqeeti, the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Jordan, to discuss ways to strengthen nursing staff through training and capacity-building initiatives, particularly in the area of mental health services.

During the meeting, held at WHO’s Jordan office and attended by the Council’s Technical Affairs Adviser Muna Nsour and senior officials from both sides, the two parties explored efforts to empower nurses and midwives across the country’s primary healthcare centers by expanding their leadership roles and integrating mental healthcare services under the WHO’s Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP).

The meeting builds on the ongoing and productive partnership between the two institutions and reflects the vision of Princess Muna Al Hussein, President of the Jordanian Nursing Council and WHO Patron for Nursing and Midwifery in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Her directives emphasize the importance of strengthening both local and international collaboration to develop the nursing profession and advance healthcare delivery toward achieving universal health coverage.

Nawafleh outlined the Council’s key mandates in regulating and advancing the profession, enhancing the professional capacities of nursing staff, and improving the quality of healthcare services for citizens. He also underscored WHO’s vital role as a strategic partner in developing Jordan’s healthcare sector, particularly in training nursing personnel and supporting mental and community health services.

For her part, Al-Shenqeeti reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting programs aimed at preparing and empowering nursing leadership across all levels of healthcare institutions.

She praised the efforts of the Jordan Nursing Council and pledged continued support for national initiatives that aim to improve nursing services and enhance primary healthcare in the Kingdom.

The two sides agreed to move forward with the implementation of high-priority joint initiatives that align with the country’s sustainable health development goals and address community health and nursing needs.
