17/ Romanian Truck Reaches Jordan via Iraq under TIR System, Cutting Transit Time to 5 Days
Amman, July 27 (Petra) – Romanian international land transport company Simon Trucks has announced the successful completion of its first truck journey from Romania to Jordan using the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) system, reducing transit time from eight weeks to just five days across a transcontinental land corridor. The TIR system, managed by the International Road Transport Union (IRU) with support from the United Nations, is one of the world’s most efficient mechanisms for facilitating cross-border trade. It uses standardized customs seals and sealed load compartments, allowing goods to be transported from origin to destination without repeated border inspections ensuring security and expediting clearance. In a statement issued Sunday, the company said the truck traveled from Romania through Bulgaria, Turkey, and Iraq before arriving in Jordan making it one of the fastest land-based deliveries from Europe to the Middle East. The journey was completed entirely by land without resorting to maritime or air freight, capitalizing on Iraq’s implementation of the TIR system in April 2025. Simon Abu Layl, founder of Simon Trucks, stressed that the breakthrough was made possible by Iraq’s official accession to the TIR system. He noted that the reduction in shipping time marks a paradigm shift in international land freight, enabling importers to receive goods faster and more reliably meeting the private sector's need for efficiency and responsiveness to market demands. "We are at the threshold of a new era in regional trade integration," he said. "We aim to expand our logistics footprint to include more countries in the region, in pursuit of free, fast, and fair trade." Rami Karout, Senior Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa at the International Road Transport Union (IRU), said the success of the journey underscores the operational efficiency of the TIR system, particularly following Iraq’s accession, which facilitated seamless and secure border crossings without delays. "We are witnessing a transformation in trade connectivity between Europe and the Middle East. The new route not only saves time but also enhances operational reliability and reduces transportation costs," he added. //Petra// AJ
