17/ Parliament Committee Recommends Flexible AI Legislation, National Charter for Safe Use

Amman, July 9 (Petra) -- The Lower House’s Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Committee has advised integration of a "flexible" legislative framework to keep pace with the "rapid" advancement of artificial intelligence technologies.

The committee also called for drafting a national charter to ensure the "safe and responsible" use of AI, mainly "clear" governance structures and ethical principles.

The recommendations came during a committee meeting held Wednesday, chaired by MP Hussein Kreishan and attended by Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Academics and Scientists Ahmad Ayasrah, along with Dr. Maher Saleem and Dr. Saqr Amouri.

Kreishan said the committee views digital transformation as a "vital" national project that requires restructuring administrative and legislative systems, enhancing transparency, and empowering youth capacities.

Kreishan stressed the need to integrate AI into the Kingdom's public sector and incorporate media literacy concepts into school and university curricula.

MPs Ahmad Aleimat, Hamed Rahamna, Adnan Mashouqa, and Fleiha Khadhir called for accelerating digital transformation in government institutions, developing relevant legislation, and preparing younger generations to use AI optimally.

Ayasrah underlined the importance of AI across all fields, urging the need to advance digital transformation on a well-organized, scientific basis.

Saleem noted digital transformation is "no longer optional but a necessity, calling for reforms to the education system to align with the digital age and for the creation of an ethical code of conduct to regulate AI use."

For his part, Amouri urged adoption of a robust legislative framework that protects personal data and steps to revise educational curricula to keep pace with rapid technological changes.
