29/ Jordan leads Arab region in green building codes, says AREC chief

Amman, July 8 (Petra) – Jordan is spearheading the development of green building codes in the Arab world and introducing new regulations to support electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, said Mohammed Al-Ta'ani, Secretary-General of the Arab Renewable Energy Commission (AREC).

Al-Ta'ani announced that the "EV-Ready Building Codes" will be officially launched during the Fifth Arab Renewable Energy Dialogue Workshop, scheduled for September in Amman.

In a press statement on Tuesday, he emphasized that these measures align with Jordan’s commitment to sustainable development and energy efficiency. The new mandatory codes will require modern buildings to incorporate EV charging infrastructure as part of broader legislation promoting green and eco-friendly construction nationwide.

"This initiative supports Jordan’s transition to a low-carbon economy and enhances urban environmental quality by reducing harmful emissions," Al-Ta'ani said. The updated codes will also become a prerequisite for licensing new buildings, ensuring compliance with the highest safety and sustainability standards.

The announcement follows a meeting between Minister of Public Works and Housing Maher Abul Samen, Ministry Secretary-General Jamal Qteishat, Al-Ta'ani, and Kamil Daqamseh, President of the Jordan Renewable Energy Society, to discuss the EV-ready building regulations.

Al-Ta'ani highlighted Jordan’s regional leadership in renewable energy and sustainable construction, including widespread adoption of solar water heaters, photovoltaic systems, and electric vehicles across residential and commercial sectors.

The upcoming workshop will showcase Jordan’s achievements in green building codes as a model for Arab nations, emphasizing opportunities for regional collaboration in clean energy and sustainability.

Scheduled for September 21–22 in Amman, the event will bring together Arab government representatives, regional organizations, and international energy stakeholders to advance renewable energy and green building policies.
