28/ Jordan, Syria hold joint technical talks on Yarmouk Basin water sharing

Amman, July 8 (Petra) – The Jordanian-Syrian Joint Technical Committee convened its first meeting on Tuesday at the Al-Wehda Dam on the border between the two countries, with discussions focusing on equitable water distribution in the Yarmouk Basin and broader cooperation on shared water resources.

The meeting was co-chaired by Hisham Haisa, Secretary General of Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) and head of the Jordanian Water Committee, and Osama Abu Zaid, Assistant Syrian Minister of Energy for Water Resources and head of the Syrian delegation.

Omar Salameh, Assistant Secretary General for Media Affairs at the Ministry of Water, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the two sides agreed on several key points to ensure fair water allocation within the Yarmouk Basin. Discussions also covered developing the basin, enhancing cloud seeding efforts, joint water infrastructure projects, and remote monitoring and control of water sources and dams.

The meeting followed recent Jordanian-Syrian talks in the fields of energy and water, held last week.

According to Salameh, Abu Zaid expressed strong cooperation and even proposed the possibility of supplying Jordan with water during the summer months, contingent on Syria’s available resources.

The two sides also agreed to hold another meeting of the joint committee next week in Damascus to continue the dialogue and finalize pending issues.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian delegation met with Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Soud, and visited the ministry’s Control and Operations Center, a leading facility equipped with advanced technologies for water management, emergency response, and remote monitoring of water resources. The Syrian side expressed interest in adopting similar systems in Syria.
