19/ MPs Recommend Expanding Jaber Crossing, Reopening Ramtha-Daraa Route

Mafraq, July 8 (Petra) – Head of the Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee, MP Khaled Abu Hassan, said the committee will submit several recommendations to the Cabinet aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of the Jaber Border Crossing.

In a statement to the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Tuesday, Abu Hassan said the proposals include increasing financial allocations to expand the center’s courtyards and halls, in light of growing pressure on the crossing, Jordan’s sole land route to Syria, due to rising traveler numbers.

The committee also recommended the automation of electronic procedures, increasing staff at the crossing, and reopening the Ramtha-Daraa border crossing to alleviate congestion and ensure the smooth movement of travelers and cargo between the two countries. Additionally, the committee urged the government to allow Jordanian citizens to travel to Syria using their private vehicles.

The visit, conducted by the committee, aimed to assess the current capabilities and operations at the Jaber Border Crossing, which currently sees over 10,000 daily travelers and about 1,500 trucks.

Abu Hassan said the center is operating at full capacity and outlined the importance of improving services for investors, travelers, and returning Syrian refugees. The committee also reviewed customs procedures related to cargo traffic and the inspection and clearance of individuals entering and exiting Syria.

He highlighted the growing momentum in Jordanian-Syrian relations, particularly in trade, economic, and investment cooperation, alongside increased passenger traffic. He stressed that Syria’s gradual return to stability will have a positive impact on economic growth and trade volume between the two countries.

The parliamentary delegation reviewed security and customs operations and toured newly inaugurated facilities at the crossing, including a bus arrival hall, an integrated border management center, and a Jordanian customs building.
