37/ Six apartments evacuated in Irbid over building collapse risk

Irbid, July 7 (Petra) – Authorities in Irbid on Monday evacuated six residential apartments in a building deemed at risk of collapse near the Darawsheh traffic light in the city's eastern district. A nearby multi-unit house was also evacuated as a precautionary measure to ensure residents' safety.

Irbid Governor Radwan Al-Atoum told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the decision was based on visible signs of structural failure and previously documented images showing significant cracks in the building. The Public Safety Committee acted on preliminary reports indicating a real and imminent risk of collapse.

Speaking from the site, Al-Atoum said the National Building Committee had dispatched a structural engineering expert to carry out an on-site inspection. The assessment was conducted in the presence of the head of the Irbid branch of the Engineers Association, Engineer Mahmoud Rababah, along with other specialists.

He noted that the committee had not yet been able to enter the building due to the potential danger, especially after reports of cracking sounds from within. A final engineering and technical report will be issued before a decision is made on the building’s future and the fate of its residents.

Al-Atoum confirmed that no injuries were reported and all residents were safely evacuated. He added that the relevant authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will announce next steps once the final report is complete.

As a further precaution, security forces closed the main road after the Darawsheh intersection, as well as surrounding streets leading to the nearby Al-Masa roundabout from the north and east, due to concerns over a potential collapse.
