33/ Monday marks 53rd anniversary of King Talal bin Abdullah's passing

Amman, July 6 (Petra) – Monday marks the 53rd anniversary of the passing of the late King Talal bin Abdullah, who died on July 7, 1972, leaving behind a legacy of significant achievements, most notably the establishment of the Jordanian Constitution and the advancement of political life in Jordan.

Since ascending the throne on September 6, 1951, following the killing of his father, King Abdullah bin Al Hussein, King Talal was dedicated to implementing reforms that laid the foundation for a society rooted in rights and duties under the law.

Among his most notable reforms was the promulgation of the Jordanian Constitution on January 8, 1952 and the decision to make education compulsory and free for all Jordanians.

A pioneer in Jordanian military history, His Majesty the late King was the first Jordanian officer to graduate from Sandhurst Military Academy in Britain. He joined the Arab Legion, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1934.

In 1942, he became part of the Second Infantry Battalion (Second Hussein Battalion). He actively participated in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, notably in the Battle of Gesher at the Majma' Bridge.

He fought in Jerusalem and Ramallah, where he held a forward position among artillery soldiers until the first truce. Before the second truce, he participated in battles at Nabi Samwil, Jabal al-Radar, Beit Surik and Beit Iksa.

As the Jordanian people remember the achievements of the late King Talal, they take pride in the ongoing progress under His Majesty King Abdullah II, who continues to lead Jordan's development as a model for the region.
