29/ Water ministry, UNDP launch campaign to implement harvesting wells in Karak

Amman, July 6 (Petra) – Ministry of Water and Irrigation launched an awareness campaign for the first phase of implementing water harvesting wells in southern Karak governorate, as part of the "Building Resilience to Cope with Climate Change in Jordan" project, by improving water use efficiency in the agricultural sector.

In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry's Secretary-General, Dr. Jihad Mahameed, said the project, which is implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will cover the areas of Karak city center, Qasr, Faqu', A'i, and Southern Mazar.

Mahameed added that the project aims to harvest rainwater, which would contribut to achieving "sustainability of water resources and reducing reliance on groundwater. "

Mahameed pointed out that an electronic link was created for the project (https://t.ly/rNBfq), aimed at informing citizens of the conditions, categories, and eligibility criteria for building rooftop rainwater harvesting wells in the governorate.

Mahameed stated that the ministry's policy and strategy for the years (2023–2040) is "keen on achieving sustainability of water resources.

This effort comes as Jordan faces "significant" pressures, mainly climate change, the Syrian refugee influx, the depletion of groundwater resources, and a gap between availability and demand," he pointed out.

Calling for creating a national culture that promotes water conservation, he praised cooperation with the UNDP in Jordan for its support of the water sector.

For her part, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Majida Assaf, highlighted the "constructive" partnership with the ministry and all national and international partners.

Assaf also affirmed the programme's "commitment" to continuing to support Jordan's efforts to achieve water security and promote sustainable development.
