15/ UK announces restoration of relations with Syria
London, July 5 (Petra) – The United Kingdom announced on Saturday it is resuming diplomatic relations with Syria coinciding with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy's visit to Damascus, the first by a senior British official in 14 years. A Foreign Office statement said Lammy reaffirmed his country's support for the new Syrian government in its efforts to rebuild the economy, achieve a comprehensive political transition, and guarantee justice for victims of the former regime. He also announced a new British support package for Syria worth £94.5 million, including humanitarian aid, educational and economic programs, in addition to £2 million as a contribution to the removal of chemical weapons left by the Assad regime. "A stable Syria is in the interest of the UK," Lammy said, stressing his country's commitment to plans to curb illegal migration, combat terrorism, and enhance regional security. //Petra//SS
