27/ Prince El Hassan opens expanded National Diabetes Centre

Amman, January 28 (Petra) -- Chairperson of the Higher Council for Science and Technology Prince El Hassan bin Talal inaugurated the new building of the National Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Genetics on Tuesday.

In a speech, Prince El Hassan urged coordination and integration between various medical sectors to enhance healthcare services. He stressed the need to move beyond institutional monopolies and adopt an integrated, collaborative approach to healthcare.

"It is time to go beyond institutional monopoly and rely on an integrated view and collective and collegial work," He stated, noting the significance of focusing on comprehensive healthcare, connecting institutions with complementary specialities to achieve excellence.

Prince El Hassan highlighted the importance of scientific research, encouraging its application to benefit human capital, the real asset of any nation. He called for a collaborative effort between research centres to focus on applied sciences for practical solutions.

Dr. Kamel Ajlouni, head of the National Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Genetics, shared insights into the centre's foundation and its significant role in combating diabetes.

He noted that studies conducted in 1995 revealed that 25% of Jordanians over the age of 25 suffer from diabetes, many of whom face related conditions such as hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol.

Dr Al-Ajlouni also highlighted the center’s success in training 36 doctors who earned fellowships in diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism, and its impressive output of 201 scientific research papers.

Dr Muhammad Al-Khatib, vice president of the centre, described the new 11-story expansion, which houses specialised facilities for diabetes-related complications, including clinics for eye care, heart health, neurology, gynecology, kidney and urology treatments.
