11/ Aqaba Embraces Cutting-Edge Tech to Safeguard Coral Reefs
Aqaba, Jan. 23 (Petra) – The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) Chairman Nayef Fayez emphasized the significance of a pioneering coral reef and biodiversity study in the Gulf of Aqaba, undertaken in partnership with the Transnational Red Sea Center. This project leverages state-of-the-art technologies to meticulously monitor and analyze the unique marine ecosystem within the Aqaba Marine Reserve, bolstering conservation efforts. During a meeting at the Aqaba Marine Reserve Visitors Center, Fayez highlighted the project's reliance on advanced technologies, including specialized cameras for 3D mapping and artificial intelligence-powered video analysis, to assess reef health, composition, and coral coverage with unprecedented accuracy. This initiative aligns with a strategic plan to expand the scientific database of the Gulf of Aqaba ecosystem, fostering research-driven sustainable management of the marine reserve. Fayez lauded the innovative and cost-effective technologies developed by the Transnational Red Sea Center, recognizing their potential as a model for efficient coral reef monitoring and protection throughout the Gulf. Echoing these sentiments, Aqaba Marine Reserve Director Naser Zawaydeh affirmed the project's alignment with the Environment and Natural Reserves Commission's efforts to enhance reserve management through comprehensive studies and surveys. The project facilitates the creation of a robust database, crucial for informed decision-making regarding marine activities within the reserve. Experts from the Transnational Red Sea Center presented project details, showcasing 3D survey results that revealed the exceptional health of the targeted coral reefs. Future plans involve collaborations with partners, including Ben Hayyan Laboratories, the University of Jordan, and the Marine Science Station. //Petra// AO
