6/ Political, Security Issues Lead Jordan's 2024 Rumor Count
Amman, Jan 19 (Petra) -- The Jordan Media Credibility Monitor (AKEED) said it documented 891 rumors in 2024, with a monthly average of 74 rumors circulating locally and internationally. Regional events, the war on Gaza and West Bank, and developments in Syria and Lebanon triggered 456 rumors, or 51.2 percent of the total, AKEED said in its annual report released Sunday. The Israeli military campaign on Gaza that began in October 2023 alone sparked 322 rumors during 2024, with numbers rising month by month as the conflict lengthened and grew more complex. Social issues across economic, political and other domains accounted for 435 rumors. Political rumors ranked first at 288 (32 percent), followed by security-related rumors at 232 (26 percent), and social issues at 185 (21 percent). Economic rumors registered 123 cases (14 percent), general affairs 49 cases (5.5 percent), while health rumors came last with 14 cases (1.5 percent). Social media platforms generated 779 rumors (87 percent), while media outlets were responsible for 112 cases (13 percent), the report noted. //Petra// AA
