31/ Jordan seeks to establish 'low-cost' housing units-HUDC

Amman, Jan. 19 (Petra) - Jordan and the European Union co-chaired the 4th Meeting of the UfM Working Group on Affordable and Sustainable Housing, which was held from January 15-16 in Barcelona.

During the two-day event, participants went over several issues on social housing programs and industrial construction, implementation mechanisms, and their cost-related impact, as well as reviewing the member states' experiences and assessing their policies.

In a statement Sunday, Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDC) said standards were set to promote "tangible" policies and discuss the challenges facing building renovation and the housing production at "reasonable" prices, mainly "high" costs of building materials and shortage of skilled labor.

Speaking at the meeting, HUDC Director General, Jumana Attiyat, praised the "distinguished" partnership in this field and the importance of technical meetings to exchange expertise.

Highlighting Jordanian government's role in supporting housing, she referred to the importance of the Economic Modernization Vision in this regard, noting HUDC's current key initiatives and priorities to implement the vision, primarily steps to prepare studies to establish "low-cost" housing units.

Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, Italy, Montenegro, Hungary, Spain, and France took part in the dialogue.

On the event's sidelines, participants made a field visit to review the Spanish experience for industrial and social housing and its role in meeting the public's needs.
